LabArchives vs Benchling
Both are electronic lab notebooks and they are shortlisted against each other constantly. They are built for meaningfully different buyers, which decides the choice faster than a feature grid does. Then there is the question neither answers, and it is usually the one that made you go looking.

The choice is usually about structure, not features
The real fork is how much structure you want imposed on your science. Benchling's centre of gravity is the registry: entities, sequences and samples as first-class records, with the notebook wrapped around them. That is powerful when your work is molecular and repetitive, and it is friction when it is not, because everything wants to become a defined entity before you can write it down.
LabArchives sits further toward the free-form end, with separate operational modules bolted alongside rather than a registry underneath. Its education and government editions signal where a lot of its base sits, and academic labs, core facilities and smaller commercial groups often find it the lower-ceremony option. If your bench work does not naturally decompose into a registry, that difference matters more than any individual feature.
A quick sort: if you would benefit from your samples and sequences being structured records, look hard at Benchling. If your notebook is genuinely a notebook and the structure you need is inventory and scheduling around it, LabArchives is the shape that fits.
What neither one holds
Here is the thing worth saying plainly, because it is the reason a lot of people end up on a page like this. Both products are notebooks for the bench. Neither was built to hold the layer above it: the CRO who slipped a date, the partner who asked for something in a thread three weeks ago, the decision you made about a program and the reasoning behind it, the deliverable you owe on Friday.
That material does not live in a registry because nobody types it into one. It lives in email, in call transcripts, and in the heads of two or three people. Swapping one ELN for another does not touch it, which is why teams sometimes migrate notebooks and find, a quarter later, that the thing that was actually hurting has not changed. When the honest answer is to keep the notebook
If your lab records sit inside a validated process, the answer is to keep the validated system and change nothing about it. A self-maintaining record is the wrong tool for a regulated notebook, and it is worth saying that rather than selling around it. The layer described here sits above the bench, not in place of it, which is also why it does not ask you to migrate anything.
