Zettelkasten with AI: automatic linking
The Zettelkasten, the slip-box method the sociologist Niklas Luhmann used to write dozens of books, works because small ideas connect to other small ideas over time. The connecting has always been done by a human, note by note. Here's what happens when AI does some of that linking, and the one part of the method it shouldn't touch.
Sönke Ahrens' How to Take Smart Notes is the book that turned Luhmann's personal system into a repeatable method, and it's worth understanding on its own terms before asking what AI changes. The system runs on three note types: fleeting notes for quick capture, literature notes that restate what you read in your own words, and permanent notes, the real unit of the system, each one holding a single idea, phrased so it stands on its own, and linked to other permanent notes it relates to. The value doesn't come from any single note. It comes from the web that forms as you keep adding and linking them, which is why Luhmann called his box a "conversation partner."

The writing step is the method. Nobody should want to automate rephrasing an idea in their own words; that act of restating is most of the thinking. The other two steps, remembering what an idea might relate to and actually making the connection, are search and pattern-matching, and that's exactly where an AI assistant with access to your full note archive can help without touching the part that matters.
What automatic linking gets right
An assistant that can read your whole slip-box can surface a candidate connection the moment you write a new permanent note, the way a very well-read collaborator would say "this sounds like the note you wrote about X three months ago." It can propose the link; it doesn't have to write your idea for you or decide the connection matters on your behalf. That's a meaningful upgrade over the search-and-recall bottleneck that's the real reason most Zettelkasten practices stall out once the box gets past a few hundred notes.
The line to hold. AI proposes connections; you confirm them. The moment AI starts writing the permanent notes themselves, you don't have a Zettelkasten anymore, you have a summarization tool with extra steps, and the "conversation partner" effect Luhmann described stops happening, because that effect comes from you doing the restating.
Where this method tends to live
Zettelkasten-style bidirectional linking is the whole reason tools like Roam and Logseq exist, and it's worth being clear-eyed about both right now.
