Anytype's own pitch is unusually direct about this: "everything in Anytype is owned and controlled by you, forever." It's local-first by design, end-to-end encrypted, and syncs peer-to-peer rather than through a server Anytype controls, with a self-hosted option for anyone who wants to run their own sync infrastructure entirely. Files vs objects: the difference that actually matters

Here's where the two diverge. Obsidian stores every note as a plain markdown file, readable in any text editor on any machine, with or without Obsidian installed. Anytype stores structured objects, people, tasks, pages, in its own local data format, encrypted on your device. Local-first is not the same promise as plain-text. You control where an Anytype object lives, but you still need Anytype's own app, or its documented protocols, to read it. That's a materially different position than markdown notes vs a database, which is worth reading if this distinction matters to you.

Collaboration: the thing Anytype adds that Obsidian doesn't have natively

One more real difference worth naming: Anytype builds shared, collaborative spaces directly into the product, with multiple people editing the same encrypted space in something close to real time. Obsidian was built for a single vault on a single machine, and real-time collaboration has always been something you bolt on through a sync service or a third-party plugin rather than something the app does on its own. If you need a private, encrypted space you're actively building with other people, Anytype is doing something Obsidian genuinely isn't built for. If it's just you, that difference doesn't matter, and the ownership and format questions above are the ones that decide it.

Anytype's AI agent, and how carefully it's being introduced

In May 2026 Anytype opened a waitlist for an early alpha of an in-app AI agent, temporarily codenamed Bobrik, that lives inside your spaces and can create content, reorganize objects, and run bulk edits from a conversation. What stands out is the caution around it: it's opt-in per space, permission-scoped the same way a human collaborator would be, and the team has said model choice is the long-term plan, letting you point it at a local model or a cloud provider of your choice rather than locking you into one. During the alpha, it runs on a cloud model through Anytype's own infrastructure, and the team has been upfront that alpha conversations are reviewed internally to debug it, an arrangement they describe as temporary. It's early, and it isn't the self-maintaining layer this site argues for, since it still waits for you to ask. But it's a more deliberate approach to bolting AI onto a private, local-first tool than most of the market has shown.

The distinction worth keeping straight. Obsidian's markdown promise means you never need the company to still exist for your notes to be readable. Anytype's local-first promise means the same company, or your own self-hosted instance of its protocol, does still need to exist, or you need its open format spec. Both are real privacy wins over a hosted database like Notion's. They are not the same promise.

What to actually check before choosing

Don't take either product's privacy pitch on faith, check it against what each one says about itself. Anytype's own materials are specific: local-first storage, end-to-end encryption, and a self-hosted sync option if you don't want to trust their infrastructure at all. Obsidian's promise is simpler and structurally harder to break: the files are just files, so there's no infrastructure to trust in the first place for the core product, only for whichever sync method you layer on top. Both are honest positions. Neither should be taken as a reason to skip reading the actual data-handling documentation before you commit a real knowledge base to either one.

Which one to actually pick

Pick Anytype if you want structured, database-like organization, encrypted sync across devices without trusting a company's servers, and you're comfortable that reading your data later requires Anytype's tooling. Pick Obsidian if the plain-text promise is non-negotiable and you're willing to trade some of Anytype's structure and built-in collaboration for it.
