Knowledge management in pharma, run by AI
The phrase covers two completely different problems in a pharmaceutical company, and only one of them is a good candidate for an agent that writes the record itself. Knowing which one you have decides what you should buy.
In pharma, "knowledge management" arrives with a specific institutional history attached. ICH Q10, the harmonized guideline on the pharmaceutical quality system, names it in section 1.6 as one of two enablers alongside quality risk management, and section 1.6.1 defines it as a systematic approach to acquiring, analysing, storing and disseminating information related to products, manufacturing processes and components. The knowledge in question is product and process knowledge, held across the lifecycle from development through to discontinuation.
That is one lane, and it is a serious one. It is also not the lane where a founder or an alliance director loses their week. The second lane has no guideline behind it and no owner: the operating record of who agreed what with whom, what is due, what was decided in a meeting nobody minuted, and which of your commitments is about to come due. Both are called knowledge management. They need different answers.

Why AI does not go into the quality lane first
Content that sits inside a validated process should stay in the system that was validated to hold it. An agent that rewrites a controlled document, or quietly moves a date on a record that is subject to change control, creates a problem that costs far more than the filing it saved. If it is scattered, the answer is a record something else keeps current. The operating lane, where the record can write itself
In the operating lane the mechanism is simple and the payoff is immediate. An email from a partner arrives, is read, filed against the right program or agreement, and the items it resolves are closed while the items it creates are opened. Dates move where the email moved them. A reply is drafted and waits for approval. Nothing outbound is sent on its own, which is the line that makes it survivable in a company with any kind of review process.
The characteristic pharma failure this catches is the obligation with a notice period. A collaboration agreement creates dozens of them, each buried in a clause, each with a clock that starts on an event rather than a date. A cost-share invoice arrives that does not match the agreed split and nobody notices because nobody holds the split. A joint steering committee makes a decision verbally and the subteam drifts from it over the following quarter because the minute was never written. A milestone triggers on an event you now have to prove happened, from records held across two companies. None of that is a quality problem and none of it is in your document system.
The same shape appears in the commercial and customer-facing functions, where the record that decays is the relationship history rather than the obligation register: what was said to whom, what was promised, what is outstanding. Choosing which lane your problem is in
Ask what you would have to reconstruct if the person who holds it left tomorrow. If the answer is a controlled document, that is the quality lane and it has an owner already.
